LOOKING FOR WHICH LOMBOK WATERFALLS ARE WORTH VISITING?

Lombok is an Indonesian island east of Bali, best known for its beaches and Indonesia’s second-largest volcano that dominates practically half the island, Mount Rinjani. But tucked away among the rice paddies terrace and lush forest slopes, Lombok has waterfalls hidden all around the island waiting to be discovered by eager adventurers.

Since the weather is drier than in Bali, the waterfall culture may not be as prevalent as in Ubud or North Bali. But with a bit more driving, you’ll find Lombok’s most spectacular waterfalls and have it to yourselves.

After spending two weeks scootering around all of Lombok in 2022, this blog post will highlight some of the amazing waterfalls to visit in Lombok and how to get there. So, if you’re planning a trip to this beautiful island paradise, add these waterfalls to your itinerary!

Travel Advice! If you only have time to visit the best, prioritize Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile in Senaru and Benang Kelambu by Tetebatu.

8 of the Best Lombok Waterfalls

Organized by geographical location, the following list is also ordered by what I think are the best waterfalls to visit in Lombok.

Book a Lombok Waterfall Tour

For a more organized venture, booking a tour will be the most hassle-free way of getting around the Lombok Waterfalls.

Here are a few tour options to the various incredible waterfalls that are perfect for people who are short on time or don’t have their own transportation. (Click on the green for the latest prices.)

Best Northern Lombok Waterfalls

1. Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Aesthetically, it’s easy to understand why Tiu Kelep is Lombok’s most famous waterfall. This majestic main flow wonderfully crashes down with one stray diagonal rush of water, making its appearance incredibly unique.

This picturesque waterfall is hidden away in the steep jungles outside the town of Senaru in the north of Lombok. Tiu Kelep can be accessed by a short hike down a well-paved stairway and path. Halfway down, you will reach a fork for Sendang Gile.

Take a right along the dirt path, where you will cross a bridge, the “Tiu Kelep Waterfall slide” with water streaming across before following another small hiking path. Relatively easy, you should arrive in less than 30 minutes.

Bonus adventure: On the bridge to Tiu Kelep, hop inside. YES INSIDE THE BRIDGE, and feel the water push you from behind as you slide horizontally across the bridge. Just make sure you stop yourself before you get to the drainage pipe!

Getting to Tiu Kelep Waterfall

Location: Senaru Village, North Lombok

How to get there: The best way to reach Tiu Kelep waterfall is to start just north of Senaru village. There are a few entry points to the waterfall. The north entrance will be the furthest walking distance, whereas the second and third entry points are closer.

Entrance Fee: 20k IDR and 5K IDR for parking (Same entrance with Sendang Gile Waterfall). Locals will offer to bring you as a guide, which you definitely do not need.

2. Sendang Gile waterfall

The tall, plunging waterfall, Sendang Gile, can be seen on one’s way to Tiu Kelep. Although usually overshadowed by Tiu Kelep, Sendang Gile’s two-tiered falls against the lush, water-soaked rain forest make it the more elegant of the two. This waterfall in Lombok is a close second in terms of beauty and popularity.

Falling straight into a shallow stream, you can’t swim or interact with this waterfall much. It takes about 15 minutes from the parking lot to get down a fully developed stairway and path.

Turn left to continue down the stairs on the way to Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

3. Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Instead of the high-energy displays that many waterfalls produce, Benang Kelambu Waterfall gently streams over an entire cliffside of bright green vegetation. All the water gathers into a stream running into an artificial pool area to take a refreshing dip under the droplets of the falls.

Already an extensive view from the pool area, a large tree obstructs the continuation of the waterfall, where you can also explore.

benangstokel, one of the best waterfalls to see on a lombok itinerary

Getting to Benang Kelambu Waterfall

Location: 45 minute drive from Tetebatu, or 1 hour drive from Mataram

Getting There: Most people will start from the relatively more touristy town, Tetebatu or Sengiggi, to reach Benang Stokel waterfall. All roads will funnel you to a Rinjani Geopark, where you will buy your entry from the ticket office nearby.

  • If you arrive by motorbike: You will always turn left up the bumpy road to the Benang Stokel parking lot. Walk on the right path down a few minutes of stairs and arrive at Benang Kelambu.
  • If you arrive by car or tour: Past the Rinjani Geopark gates, walk up the road until you see the sign for Benang Stokel. Continue up past vendor huts to arrive at the parking lot of Benang Stokel for another short flight of stairs down.

Entrance fee: 60K IDR entrance or 90k-120k IDR for a local guide. Foreigners will pay much more than domestic travelers, and the price seems to change depending on the day and your haggling skills.

4. Benang Stokel Waterfall

Benang Stokel Waterfall is a large, plunging double waterfall (during dry season) flowing into a clearing a 15 minute short walk from Benang Kelamak. During the rainy season, the falls become more impressive and will have three runs instead of two.

Benang Stokel is a decent waterfall but vastly less cool than its neighbor, Benang Kelambu. If you are walking, I recommend seeing Benang Kelambu first so you won’t be disappointed seeing it second.

Getting To Benang Stokel Waterfall

If you arrive by motorbike: You will drive up the terrible road to the Benang Stokel waterfall and do a short trek of about 15 minutes to get to Benang Kelambu. From Benang Stokel, there is no direct way; you must go back up the stairs to the parking lot and take the left fork.

If you arrive by car or tour: Benang Stokel will be the first waterfall you see. Once inside the Rinjani Geopark gates, follow up the road until you see a walking path sign to enter into. The path will take you straight to Benang Stokel.

5. Kelewon, Sesere, and Jumping Spot Mini-Waterfalls

In the Rinjani geopark with the same entrance as Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu, three other lesser known waterfalls can be found on side paths between the two main ones. When walking between Benang Stokel and Kelambu, where the vendor huts are set up, a few smaller hiking paths lead to the waterfalls.

The entrance office pushes getting a local guide to find these smaller waterfalls and the not-that-tall cliff jumping spot. We didn’t opt to get the guide, nor did we actually take the time to find these, so I’m not sure how necessary a guide would be.

6. Sarang Walet Waterfall

Sarang Walet is a beautiful waterfall in central Lombok, a hidden gem amongst the rice fields of Tetebatu. To a foreigner’s eyes, the entrance wouldn’t seem like it would lead to a moody slot canyon with bamboo bridges and a short trudge through the uneven-terrain river.

The path alone makes Sarang Walet worth the effort. Still, when the delicate glow of the small waterfall glistened in a canyon cave, the experience was unforgettable. The best part: we had it all to ourselves.

Getting To Sarang Walet Waterfall

Location: Tetebatu, Central Lombok

Getting There: The best way to get to Sarang Walet Waterfall is to take your own scooter, take a tour (like this Tetebatu walking tour), or hire a private driver to wait for you. Right in Tetebatu, the distance is not far from the major grouping of restaurants and accommodation options. We stayed at Bale Kembang Kuning, only a 7 minute walk away.

Go down the unseeming stairs to get to the bamboo bridge, which ends in the river. From there, roll up your pant sleeves as the water can reach your thighs before arriving at the small falls.

Tip: For those with expensive camera equipment, water is constantly dripping from above, so watch both below and above.

Entrance fee: It cost 20,000 IDR for the entrance fee and some drunk locals to “care for our bikes” (of which they were no longer there when we got out).

Best East Lombok Waterfall

7. Mangku Sakti Waterfall

Mangku Sakti is a backwoods, out-of-the-way Lombok waterfall hidden behind a mining or construction operation. Despite the hardship in arriving, you’ll first notice the river’s milky blue appearance flowing as you arrive at the trailhead.

As a direct source from Mount Rinjani’s crater lake, the sulfur-rich waters emit an appealing color, smoothly carving out the limestone rock it runs through. After a long drive and a confusing 10-15 minute walk, the brush gives way to a beautiful flow starting from Mangku Sakti waterfall and continuing through a jagged slot canyon.

Tip #1: There are a bunch of waterfalls along this river if you want to see more.
Tip #2: If you go near the falls, there is a small cave you can climb into behind the running water.

Learn from my Mistake! Do not lie down on the rocks. There’s something on there that irritates your skin wherever you touch it.

Getting to Mangku Sakti Waterfall

Location: 45 minutes from Tetebatu or 1 hour from Mataram (Google Maps Location)

How to get there: Mangku Sakti Waterfall lies between Senaru (45 minute drive) and Sembulan (20 minutes drive). Once you turn up towards Rinjani, the road turns unpaved and steep. Expect to ride about 30 minutes across heavily eroded roads, sand, and even metal blanks across rivers.

When you see the blue river, the sand gets too deep to continue, which is your hint to park your scooter.

Do not follow the footprints along the river. If you turn to the left through the brush, there is a slightly overgrown hiking path. Along the way, a small steep path forks to the right if you want to see another smaller falls.

Return to the path and at the fork, turn right. There will be a dilapidated sign which I can only assume was the original sign for Mangku Sakti. You’ve gone too far if you’ve walked more than 10-15 minutes since parking.

Entrance fee: Free, no infrastructure at all

8. Honorary Waterfall: Nambung Waterfall near Kuta Lombok

An hour’s drive from Kuta, a rock formation creates an illusionary waterfall during the low tide on the east side of Nambung Beach in south Lombok. Make sure not to get too close to the “waterfall” during large waves or high tide, as one big wave can drag you out to sea.

Nearby a cool sandbank also forms in low tide that you can swim to.

How to Get There: Scooter for about an hour on good but steep roads to arrive at Nambung Beach rocky hill.

How to Get Around to the Lombok Waterfalls

Most of the best waterfalls in Lombok are not close together and public transportation in Lombok is non-existent. It will take multiple days, and a good amount of driving to get to the different areas the waterfalls are located in.

Get your Own Scooter

Renting your own scooter is the easiest way to see the waterfalls on Lombok. You don’t have to worry about finding a ride or signing up for more expensive tour guides, and you can take all the time you want at each spot.

Hire a Private Driver for the Day

I get it; not everyone is comfortable riding their own scooter. There are lots of horror stories, and with how terrible some of the roads in Lombok are, I don’t blame you.

Hiring a private driver for the day is an option and should cost around 30-50$ per day, depending on your negotiation skills and how far you want to go. Just give the driver your itinerary, and he will take you around.
