Why Angel’s Billabong in Bali Is the Most Surprising Natural Pool You’ll Ever See

Nomadicated Disclaimer

Want to splash around in a natural infinity pool, Angel’s Billabong in Bali?

Angel’s Billabong is a beautiful natural tidal pool on Nusa Penida, a Bali island renowned for its crystal clear water, dramatic cliffs, and gripping rock formations.

The name “Angel’s Billabong” comes from its serene and heavenly appearance. The pool’s water is a vibrant turquoise color and is surrounded by rocky cliffs. During low tide, the pool becomes accessible for swimming. During high tide, seawater pounds into the pool, reflooding the natural infinity pools over and around the rocks.

I’ve visited Nusa Penida three times already, and I would still go back. Honestly, it’s one of my absolute favorite places in the world! This guide has everything you need to know, from directions to what to expect, so you come at the right time. (Yes, there is a wrong time!)

Where Is It Located?

Angel’s Billabong is on the western coast of Nusa Penida Island, an island off East Bali.

Drive the 17-kilometer journey from the Toya Pakeh Harbour to the parking lot. Your trip on a scooter or car should take approximately 45 minutes – it all depends on your prowess while navigating hilly roads!

How do I get to Angel’s Billabong?

Getting to Nusa Penida

First, make your way over to Nusa Penida. The most efficient option is taking a speedboat from Sanur, Padang Bai, or Kusamba. You can easily book your seat online in advance here.

Although it may require some organization to plan the route, a cheaper alternative to speed boats is riding the public ferry from Kusamba to Buyuk Harbor in Penida.

There are also ferry options that often run from Nusa Lembongan, which leaves whenever it’s full.

Pro tip: Don’t let people sway you into believing that the ferry no longer runs – they just want you to purchase their expensive speedboat ticket!

Getting to Angel’s Billabong

The best and cheapest way to arrive is by renting a scooter from one of the many services or your accommodation. It’ll only cost you around 60,000 IDR at most places. But if you’re getting it directly from the pier, they may ask for 70,000 IDR – 80,000 IDR daily.

Got Travel Insurance?

Taking out travel insurance when traveling in Asia is a smart move. At least you don’t want to be financially crippled, even if you’re walking around with bandages on your shins and elbows. It’s inevitable in SEA.

With SafetyWing, you can find yourself a plan that fits your budget – as low as a couple dollars a day with automated payment options.

Find out more information about Safety Wings here.

Sadly, public transportation in this area is practically non-existent – even in densely populated areas. It’s better not to rely on it for your travel needs here.

If you lack scooter confidence, hire a private driver for the day. It’ll cost around 500,000 IDR or can be easily arranged online – right here!

General Information

How much is entry to Angel’s Billabong?

The entrance fee to Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach is only 5,000 IDR, with an extra 5,000 IDR parking fee.

Opening Times

This destination welcomes visitors all day long, but the best times to visit are early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Be aware – as it has two remarkable Bali attractions, this point draws large crowds.

When should I visit Angel’s Billabong?

Best Time of the Year

The best time of year to visit is May through October. During these months, you can take in its paradise-like seascapes without worrying about rain or crazy humidity. Check the forecast here.

Best Time of Day

The best time to visit is early, like before 10 am or late afternoon, to beat the worst of the crowds. This is a popular tourist spot, so all the guided tours come here in the middle of the day.

If you decide to explore later in the day, experiencing that beautiful golden hour through post-sunset hues is excellent! Just be mindful if you’re driving around on your own- consider whether you would be ok going back during the nighttime.

Note: The sunset can’t be seen in the direction of the infinity pool.

Can you swim in Angel’s Billabong?

Yes, but it is only recommended to swim here during low tide. You may have seen some videos of a giant wave during high tide sweeping through the cove, carrying people out to sea. It can be extremely dangerous, so time your visit.

Check here for the tide schedule of Nusa Penida.

What to Expect: Things to Do & Tips

After the parking area, you’ll walk a few minutes, passing various selfie spots and warungs before coming to Angel’s Billabong.

Jump in! But don’t actually, the rocks are pretty sharp and uncomfortable to walk on. Lower yourself in and play in the super turquoise water. On the edge of the “pool,” marvel at the waves crashing into the scenic seascape.

Potential Danger! Plan your visit to correspond with low tide to avoid getting swept away by a powerful current. Even then, be mindful that unexpected rogue waves may unexpectedly emerge.

Combine your trip with next-door neighbor, Broken Beach. Another 5-minute walk beyond this angelic swimming spot, you’ll see the magnificent rock archway start to appear, with the ocean gracefully flowing into a natural basin.

Book Bukit Sancure Hostel, just do it! The place just attracts the most amazing travelers, it literally reinvigorated my travel burnout, so much so that I went back a second time months later.

Not only are the owner, his wife, and their staff will be sure to make you feel right at home as soon as you check-in! They will even provide you with a Google Map of nearby attractions.

If your travels include arriving or departing from Toya Pakeh Harbour, the owner will drive there himself just to pick you up for free. This fantastic place also provides some of the best bargains on scooter rentals and dorm beds throughout Nusa Penida island!

Bucket List Worthy: Is Angel’s Billabong Worth Visiting?

Absolutely, Angel’s Billabong is a must-see on a Nusa Penida itinerary! I had such an incredible experience taking random videos and swimming around the azure pool. Also, the sight of crashing waves is absolutely mesmerizing.

Don’t miss out on Broken Beach, and look out for manta rays gliding through the waters! Or combine other attractions on the west coast like Kelingking Beach or Banah Cliff.
